Was तथा Were का प्रयोग Simple Past Tense तथा Past Continuous Tense में Auxiliary Verbs के रूप में होता है। जिन वाक्यों के में था, थी, थे आदि शब्द आते हैं। उनका अनुवाद हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में करते समय इनकी अंग्रेजी was तथा were लगाते हैं। जैसे;

वह एक जादूगर था।
He was a magician.
तुम बहुत परेशान थे।
You were very upset.
मैं खुश नहीं था।
I was not happy.
क्या रोहन व्यस्त था?
Was Rohan busy?
क्या तुम कल कानपुर में थे?
Were you in Kanpur yesterday?
चोर बहुत चालाक था।
The thief was very clever.
राजा बहुत खुश था।

Note: ऊपर दिए गए वाक्यों में गहरे काले रंग में लिखे हुए हिंदी वाक्यों के शब्दों “था, थी, थे” की अंग्रेजी नीचे दिए गए उनके अनुवाद में छपे गहरे काले was तथा were हैं।

Past Continuous Tense में Was तथा Were का प्रयोग Helping Verb (सहायक क्रिया) के रूप में होता है। इनके साथ मुख्य क्रिया की first form के साथ ing का प्रयोग करते हैं। जैसे;

Use of Was and Were with This, That, These and Those

Was का प्रयोग This तथा That के साथ तथा Were का प्रयोग These तथा Those के साथ होता है। जैसे;

1. यह पुराना था।
This was old.

2. यह एक पुराना घर था।
This was an old house.

3. वह लड़का बीमार था।
That boy was ill.

4. ये फूल ताजे थे।
This flowers were fresh

5. वे पेड़ हरे थे।
Those were green trees.

6. वे काले घोड़े थे।
Those were black horses.

Use of Was and Were in Passive Voice

जब Active Voice का वाक्य Passive Voice में बदलते हैं तो Was तथा Were को was being तथा were being में बदलकर लिखते हैं।

Active: He was writing a letter.
Passive: A letter was being written by him.

Active: You were eating an apple.
Passive: An apple was being eaten by you.

Active: I was reading a book.
Passive: A book was being read by me.

Use of Was and Were with It and There

Was का प्रयोग It के साथ होता है। Was तथा Were There के साथ होता है। जैसे;

1. हमारे शहर में एक अस्पताल था।
There was a hospital in our city.

2. तुम्हारे गांव में एक नदी नहीं थी।
There was no river in your village.

3. कल रविवार नहीं था।
