Past Indefinite Tense का प्रयोग उन घटनाओं या कार्यों को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है जो भूतकाल में समाप्त हुये हैं। Past Indefinite Tense टेंस के प्रयोग से पता चलता है कि कार्य पूरी तरह से समाप्त हो गया है अर्थात आगे उसके जारी रहने की कोई संभावना नहीं है। Past Indefinite Tense को Hindi में अनिश्चित भूतकाल या सामान्य भूतकाल कहते हैं। जैसे;

1. उसने कल एक गाय खरीदी।
He bought a new cow.

2. मैंने पिछले सप्ताह आपको एक पत्र भेजा।
I sent you a letter last week.

3. तुमने रविवार को मुझे फोन किया।
You phoned me on Sunday.

4. इस लड़के ने कमरे की सफाई की।
This boy cleaned the room.

5. हमने शाम को मैच जीता।
We won the match in the evening.

6. उन्होंने इस समस्या का समाधान किया।
They solved this problem.

7. सोहन ने कल एक नया छाता खरीदा।

Past indefinite tense in Hindi (Simple past tense in Hindi)

Past indefinite Tense का प्रयोग वाक्यों में दिए गए भूतकाल के कार्यों या घटनाओं को व्यक्त किया जाता है। Past Indefinite Tense से व्यक्त होता है कि किसी व्यक्ति द्वारा किए हुए कार्य की समाप्ति हो चुकी है जो कि अब आगे जारी नहीं रह सकता है। इस टेंस को (simple past tense) सिंपल पास्ट टेंस भी कहते हैं। जैसे;

  • मैंने आपको कल ₹100 दिए। (I gave you ₹100 yesterday.)
  • उसने रात को यह कुर्सी तोड़ी। (He broke this chair at night.)
  • श्याम जनवरी में आगरा गया। (Shyam went to Agra in January.)
  • रोहन ने यह कार 1990 में खरीदी। (Rohan bought this car in 1990.)
  • उसने यह घड़ी दो दिन पहले खरीदी। (He bought this watch two days back.)
  • मैंने कल आपको नहीं पहचाना।  (I didn’t recognize you yesterday.)
  • जनता ने उसे चोरों से बचाया। (The public saved him from thieves.)

Explanation: ऊपर दिए गए वाक्यों में से पहले वाक्य में किसी व्यक्ति द्वारा किसी को ₹100 देने का कार्य हुआ है जो कि अब पूरी तरह से समाप्त हो चुका है।

दूसरे वाक्य में कुर्सी तोड़ने का कार्य रात को हुआ अर्थात किसी व्यक्ति द्वारा कुर्सी पूरी तरह से टूट चुकी है।

तीसरे वाक्य में श्याम का आगरा जाने का कार्य जनवरी में समाप्त हुआ है तथा अंत वाले वाक्य में रोहन के द्वारा 1990 में कार खरीदी गई जो कि यह समय भूतकाल का है और यह निकल चुका है।

इन वाक्यों में जिन कार्यों का बोध हुआ है, वे पूर्ण रूप समाप्त हो चुके हैं, अतः ये सभी वाक्य पास्ट इंडेफिनिट टेंस (past indefinite tense) के हैं।

Past Indefinite Tense की पहचान

Past Indefinite Tense के हिंदी वाक्यों की क्रियाओं के अंत में था, थी, थे, ता था, ती थी, ते थे,  या, यी, ये, दा, दी, दे आदि शब्द आते हैं। इन वाक्यों का अनुवाद Past Indefinite Tense में हिन्दी से अंग्रेजी में करते हैं। जैसे;

  • वह एक अच्छा डॉक्टर था।
  • तुम उसके मित्र थे।
  • लता मंगेशकर बहुत प्रसिद्ध गायिका थीं।
  • मैं कल आगरा जाना चाहता था।
  • वह प्रतिदिन विद्यालय जाती थी।
  • उसने बाग से फल तोड़े।
  • रामानंद ने एक नई कार नहीं खरीदी।

Past Indefinite Tense के अंग्रेजी वाक्यों में मुख्य क्रिया की second form या सहायक क्रिया was/were (to be) तथा did का प्रयोग होता है।

  • He was a good doctor.
  • You were his friend.
  • Lata Mangeshkar was a very famous singer.
  • I wanted to go to Agra tomorrow.
  • She went to school every day.
  • He plucked fruits from the orchard.
  • Ramanand did not buy a new car.

Main Verb (मुख्य क्रिया)

Past Indefinite Tense की मुख्य क्रिया verb की first form तथा second form होती हैं। मुख्य क्रिया की सेकंड फॉर्म का प्रयोग simple/affirmative sentences में तथा फर्स्ट फॉर्म का प्रयोग negative तथा Interrogative sentences में होता है। जैसे;

  • He came. (Simple)
  • He did not come. (Negative)
  • Did he come? (Interrogative)

Helping Verb सहायक क्रिया

Past indefinite tense की सहायक क्रिया did होती है। इसके अतिरिक्त verb to be की forms ‘was/were’ का प्रयोग इस टेंस में होता है।

  • I did not hit her.
  • She was ill.
  • They were in the field.

Rule (1) – Past Indefinite Tense के साधारण वाक्यों में एक वचन कर्ता तथा बहुवचन कर्ता के साथ मुख्य क्रिया की सेकंड फॉर्म का प्रयोग करते हैं। इनके साथ सहायक क्रिया का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।

Singular subjects (एकवचन कर्ता)

  • He went. (वह दौड़ा।)
  • She played. (वह खेली।)
  • It rained. (बरसात हुई।)
  • Ram came. (राम आया।)
  • The girl danced. (लड़की नाची।)
  • The boy ran. (लड़का दौड़ा।)

Plural Subjects (बहुवचन कर्ता)

  • I went. (मैं आया।)
  • We played. (हमने खेला।)
  • You wrote. (तुमने लिखा।)
  • They ate. (उन्होंने खाया।)
  • Ram and Shyam slept. (राम और श्याम सोए।)
  • He and I waited. (मैंने और उसने इंतजार किया।)
  • The girls helped. (लड़कियों ने मदद की।)

Rule (2) – Negative तथा Interrogative Sentences में सहायक क्रिया ‘Did’ का प्रयोग होता है तथा मुख्य क्रिया की first form आती है।

  • I did not see him. (मैंने उसे नहीं देखा।)
  • She did not come. (वह नहीं आई।)
  • Did you open it? (क्या आपने इसे खोला?)
  • What did he buy? (उसने क्या खरीदा?)
  • Why did the writer say it? (लेखक ने ऐसा क्यों कहा?)

Rules (3) Past Indefinite Tense में Adverbs of Time का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे;

  • वह कल मुझे मिला। (He met me yesterday.)
  • मि. चौहान ने 2 दिन पहले मुझसे बात की। (Mr Chauhan talked to me two days ago.)

Past indefinite tense के affirmative sentences बनाने के लिए निम्नलिखित नियमों तथा sentence structure को फॉलो करते हैं।

  • सबसे पहले वाक्य का कर्ता (subject) रखते हैं।
  • उसके बाद मुख्य क्रिया की सेकंड फॉर्म देखते हैं।
  • उसके बाद कर्म (object) रखते हैं।
  • कर्म के बाद यदि कोई अन्य शब्द (other words) आते हैं तो उन्हें रखते हैं।
  • अंत में  full stop लगाते हैं।

Note: ध्यान रखें कि साधारण वाक्यों में सहायक  क्रिया Did का प्रयोग नहीं करते हैं।

Sentence Structure: Subject + Verb II + Object + Other Words

1. उसने कल तुम्हें दो पेंसिल दी थी।
He gave you two pencils yesterday.

2. ये लड़के अपने खिलौनों से खेले।
These boys played with their toys.

3. श्याम 2 साल पहले मुझे गणित पढ़ाता था।

4. मैं पिछले सप्ताह पिताजी के साथ वहां गया।
I went there with Dad last week.

5. मैंने कल सुबह बगीचे में एक आम खाया।
I ate a mango in the garden yesterday morning.

6. पिछले साल तुम्हारे पिता ने एक पत्र लिखा।
Last year I wrote a letter to your father.

7. आज विद्यालय में हमने अपनी किताबें पढ़ी थीं।
Today we read our books in the school.

8. दो दिन पहले शेर ने गीदड़ को मारा था।
The Lion killed the jackal two days ago.

9. तुमने मेरी कमीज जला दी।
You burnt my shirt.

10. श्याम ने छोटे बच्चों को अंग्रेजी पढ़ाई।

11. हम सुबह स्कूल जा सके।

23. भारत ने अमेरिका से बहुत से हथियार खरीदे।

24. हमने कल उसकी सहायता की।

25. बच्चों ने रात को गाय का दूध पिया।

26. तुमने कल उसे ₹500 दिए।

27. तुम्हारे दादा जी ने कल एक व्यक्ति की मदद की। Your grandfather helped a person tomorrow.

Negative sentences of Past Indefinite Tense

Past indefinite tense के Negative Sentences को बनाने के लिए नीचे दिए गए steps को फॉलो करते हैं।

  • सबसे पहले वाक्य का कर्ता (subject) रखते हैं।
  • उसके बाद did not या didn’t रखते हैं।
  • सहायक क्रिया के बाद मुख्य क्रिया की फर्स्ट फॉर्म रखते हैं।
  • मुख्य क्रिया के बाद कर्म (object) रखते हैं।
  • कर्म के बाद यदि अन्य शब्द (other words) आए हैं उन्हें रखते हैं।
  • अंत में full  stop लगाते हैं।

Note: Past Indefinite Tense के Negative Sentences वाक्य बनाने के लिए कुछ क्रिया-विशेषण (adverbs) तथा सर्वनाम (Pronouns) का भी प्रयोग होता है। जैसे;

प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य (interrogative sentences) दो तरह से बनाए जाते हैं; ‘क्या’ से शुरू होने वाले भक्तों तथा ‘प्रश्नवाचक शब्द’ से शुरू होने वाले वाक्य। दोनों तरह के वाक्यों को बनाने का तरीका नीचे विस्तार से समझाया गया है।

Yes-No Type Interrogative Sentences

जो वाक्य ‘क्या’ शब्द से प्रारंभ होते हैं; उन्हें Yes-No Type Questions कहा जाता है। ऐसे वाक्यों को अंग्रेजी में बनाते समय ‘क्या’ शब्द की अंग्रेजी नहीं लगाते हैं। उसकी जगह सहायक क्रिया did को वाक्य के प्रारंभ में रखते हैं तथा नीचे दिया गया सेंटेंस स्ट्रक्चर फॉलो करते हैं।

Interrogative Negative Sentences of Past Indefinite Tense

प्रश्नवाचक नकारात्मक वाक्य को बनाने के लिए वाक्यों में subject के बाद not जोड़ देते हैं और वाक्य interrogative negative बन जाता है। इसके लिए नीचे दिए गए सेंटेंस स्ट्रक्चर के अनुसार interrogative negative sentences को बनाते हैं।

Yes-No Type Negative Questions

जो वाक्य ‘क्या’ से शुरू होते हैं तथा जिनमें ‘नहीं’ आता है। उनको नीचे दिए गए सेंटेंस स्ट्रक्चर के अनुसार बनाते हैं या वाक्य की प्रारंभ में didn’t प्रयोग भी कर सकते हैं।

Structure for yes-no type questions: Did + subject + not + verb I + other words + other words +?

Examples:

1. क्या तुमने तुमने अपने अध्यापकों की बात नहीं मानी?
Did you not listen to your teachers?

Wh-word Type Negative Questions

जिन वाक्यों में प्रश्नवाचक शब्द आता है तथा नोट नहीं आता है उन्हें wh-word type negative questions कहते हैं। इन्हें बनाने के लिए नीचे दिए गए सेंटेंस स्ट्रक्चर का प्रयोग करते हैं या प्रश्नवाचक शब्द के बाद didn’t प्रयोग भी कर सकते हैं।

Use Past Indefinite Tense in Hindi (Simple Past Tense)

Past Indefinite Tense का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित actions को व्यक्त करने के लिए होता है।

Rule (1) – पास्ट इंडेफिनिट टेंस का प्रयोग को उन actions को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है, जो भूतकाल में किसी निश्चित समय में पूरे हुए हों या समाप्त हुए हैं।

Examples:

1. वह 5:00 बजे बाजार गया।
He went to the market at 5:00.

2. मैंने पिछले महीने दो उपन्यास पढ़े।
I read two novels last month.

3. इस कंपनी का निर्माण 1950 में हुआ था।
This company was formed in 1950.

4. उसने यह कार्य कल नहीं किया।
He did not do this work yesterday.

5. मैंने आपको कल दो बिस्कुट के पैकेट दिए।
I gave you two packets of biscuits yesterday.

6. तुमने उसे कल पानी नहीं दिया।
You didn’t give him water yesterday.

7. मैंने 2:00 बजे टीवी नहीं देखी।
I didn’t watch TV at 2:00.

8. क्या इस भालू ने तुम पर आक्रमण किया?
Did this bear attack you?

9. क्या तीन दिन पहले मैंने तुम से पैसे उधार लिए?
Did I borrow money from you three days ago?

10. उसने यहां घर क्यों बनाया?

Rule (2) – Past Indefinite Tense का का प्रयोग भूतकाल की आदतों को व्यक्त करने के लिए करते हैं।

Examples:

1. वह बचपन में क्रिकेट खेलता था।
He played cricket in his childhood.

2. उसने हमेशा मेरी मदद करता था।
He always helped me.

3. वह शनिवार को आगरा जाता था।
He went to Agra on Saturdays.

4. वह कभी गाली नहीं देती थी।
She never abused.

5. वह मेरे घर पर दिन आता था।
He used to come to my house every day.

6. मैं अपने तीन मित्रों के साथ विद्यालय जाता था।
I used to go to school with three of my friends.

7. वह मुझे बचपन में चिढ़ाता था।
He used to tease me in my childhood.

8. पिताजी रात में घर नहीं आते थे।
Father did not come home at night.

9. दादाजी सेना में नौकरी करते थे।
Grandfather used to serve in the army.

10. गांधीजी कभी झूठ नहीं बोलते थे।
Gandhiji never told a lie.

Used to तथा Would का प्रयोग Past Indefinite Tense में

भूतकाल की आंदतों (Past Habits) को व्यक्त करने के लिए used to तथा would का भी प्रयोग होता है।

Examples:

1. वह बचपन में क्रिकेट खेला करता था।
He used to play cricket in his childhood.

2. वे शाम को पार्क में टहला करते थे।
They would walk in the park in the evening.

3. वह अपने बच्चों के साथ पार्क में बैठा करता था। He used to sit in the park with his children.

4. Grandfather used to go to the temple in the morning.

5. We used to play chess in our room.

6. Raju used to go to the village on holidays.

4. दादा जी सुबह मंदिर जाया करते थे। Grandfather used to go to the temple in the morning.

5. हम अपने कमरे में शतरंज खेला करते थे। We used to play chess in our room.

6. राजू छुट्टियों में गांव जाया करता था। Raju used to go to the village on holidays.

Rule (3) – इस टेंस का प्रयोग बीते हुए समय से संबंधित परिस्थितियों का बोध कराने के लिए होता है।

Examples:

1. वह बहुत बड़ा कवि था।
He was a great poet.

2. श्याम कल बीमार था।
Shyam was ill yesterday.

3. मैं बहुत ईमानदार था।
I was very honest.

4. बहुत अंधेरा था।
It was very dark.

Rule (4) – Past Indefinite Tense का प्रयोग भूतकाल में किसी घटना या कार्य की होते रहने को को व्यक्त करने के लिए भी करते हैं।

Examples:

1. While I played, she cooked the food. (जब मैं खेला, उसने खाना बनाया।)

2. When her son slept, she worked.
(जब उसका बेटा सो गया, तो उसने काम किया।)

Rule (5) Conditional Sentences में पास्ट इंडेफिनिट टेंस का प्रयोग if clause में होता है।

Examples:

1. If you worked hard you might pass the examination.
यदि आपने कड़ी मेहनत की है तो आप परीक्षा पास कर सकते हैं।

2. If they played well, they could win the match.
अगर वे अच्छा खेलते तो मैच जीत सकते थे।

Rule (6) Indirect Speech के वाक्यों में past indefinite tense के वाक्यों को Past Perfect Tense में बदला जाता है।

Examples:

1. He said to me, “I went to market yesterday.” (direct)
उसने मुझसे कहा, “मैं कल बाजार गया था।” (प्रत्यक्ष)

He told me that he had gone to market the previous day. (Indirect)
उसने मुझे बताया कि वह पिछले दिन बाजार गया था। (अप्रत्यक्ष)

2. You said to her, “Father purchased a new novel two days ago.” (Direct)
आपने उससे कहा, “पिताजी ने दो दिन पहले एक नया उपन्यास खरीदा था।”  (प्रत्यक्ष)

You told her that father had purchased a novel two days before. (Indirect)
आपने उसे बताया कि पिता ने दो दिन पहले एक उपन्यास खरीदा था।  (अप्रत्यक्ष)
